The Bears is a Dutch organization that was founded in 1977 by a group of enthusiastic hockey players. All with a similar interest namely; to play hockey and to meet as many interesting people as possible.
Those people came together and decided to form a group that would play hockey outside to normal Dutch club hockey competition. This team has now been going from tournament to tournament and from club to club for more than 30 years.
Originally the majority of the members came from the west of the Netherlands. Most of the founding members were also member of the hockey club Hurley in Amsterdam. During the years many new members came and also many left again, which resulted in a mix of members from all over the country, especially in the regions of Amsterdam, Utrecht, The Hague and Eindhoven. The renewal of the Bears members is what we call the search for the people with the true Bears spirit. During all those years since 1977, the Bears have played all over Europe. The Bears have visited the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany, England, Italy and even Kenya.
A number of years ago, at our twentieth anniversary, we organized an international tournament where we invited many of the teams we played against in the past years. Many of our old friends showed up and we do believe everybody enjoyed it very much. Some pictures of that tournament can be found in the Gallery section of this site.
Every fifth anniversary we organized an international tournament where we invited many of the teams we played against in the past years. Many of our old friends showed up and we do believe that everybody enjoyed it very much every time. Some pictures of those tournaments can be found in the Gallery section of this site. Our ‘fifth anniversary’ tournaments were at HC Haarlem in 1987, at HC Push in Breda in 1997 and at EMHC in Eindhoven in 2002 and 2007.
Although hockey is main business, we do sometimes play other sports: cricket, skating, squash, golf, skiing and leisure sports: sailing and survival trips. Because socializing is also possible during non-sporting events The Bears organize their annual meeting and every second Saturday of the year their New Year social.
